Home Improvement Tips: Sofa Selection Tips

Sofa is an inalienable part of the interior of every flat or office. And if you have to decide which sofa to buy, you should take it seriously. At first, you should decide for what function you will use it. It can be used instead of the bed or it can be a place for rest and watching TV. Another important issue is the quality of sofa. The opinion that only Italian furniture is good is wrong. The basis for quality estimation is following parts of the construction – sofa frame, upholstery and stuff. Producers use different materials, and the final sofa price of course depends on it.

Sizes and style
Considering the sofa style use your own likes and dislikes Of course you will choose sofa style and design according to your likes and dislikes. Sofas with wooden frame and classic upholstery will suit to every room. Of course you can choose a sofa in the latest modern Hi-Tech brand. It is important that the sofa harmonizes with the interior.

Before choosing a sofa you should decide whether you need two- or three-seater sofa. Two-seater will be rather narrow if you are not alone. In such case three-seater or different combinations of two-seater are recommended. Of course the sofa sizes should suit your room, so that you won’t have to think where to put it. Looking for a best design, don’t forget about sofa parameters. If it will have low back without support for your head and back, then any beauty will replace the comfort.

The choice of the sofas is very rich. But if you know more about your future purchase, then it will be much easier to choose one of them.

Choice of sofa frame
Sofas with wooden frame (top) are classical ones, with metal frame (bottom) - Hi-Tech In the production of sofas 3 types of frames are used: wooden, metal and a combination of wooden timbers and particle boards. So you can choose a sofa according to your requirements to durability, mass and the price.

Sofas with wooden frame ideally supplement any room, especially the one decorated in classical style. They create an additional feeling of comfort and cosiness. The frame material can be from different wood. Producers, who make the frames from conifer, produce cheap furniture of low quality. The most durable will be a frame made of oak, nut-tree, beech or ash-tree. Birchen frame may also be used for the sofa. Such construction will be cheaper, but will be also durable. Mahogany can be used only in elite expensive furniture.

No matter what kind of wood is used for a frame, there should be no knots on it. It should be properly dried. There are cases when moisture from wood is noticed on the upholstery. Of course it is unacceptable. Properly dried wood won’t creak during the whole operation life.

Ideally smooth surface testify the high production quality. Parts should be well glued together, and the main frame components should be bolt together. If in the frame screws are used, then the sofa can become shaky.

Metal frame was used only for chairs, but now it is also used for sofas. Such frame will make the furniture look extraordinary; it is used in the Hi-tech style rooms. Metal frame furniture is easily repaired, it is an additional advantage, if you decided to choose it. You can choose any upholstery or change it. Metal frame can be of any color or profile. Of course such frame will be refractory, which can be important for offices. The most reliable and long living are considered to be metal frames with welded components.

Fame made of combination of wooden timbers and particle boards. It has the same qualities as the wooden frames. But it should be considered that particle boards should be covered with special paint, to protect from harmful gums excretion. There are models with a frame made only of particle boards. They are much cheaper.

Sofa stuff
The main sofa stuff is foam-rubber and spring cartridge. The sofa should be soft and elastic, with different thickness of the surface, so that you’ll feel comfortable on it. Before the purchase, you should know that the stuff in the seat, back and arms should have different firmness. The firmest stuff should, of course, be in the seat.

The cheapest stuff variant is the pieces of foam-rubber. But you won’t save money on such sofa, because in few years it will roll over and you’ll have to buy a new one. At least there should be a whole piece of foam-rubber. Such sofa will keep its form for about 4 years. Nowadays polyurethane is sometimes used instead of foam-rubber. It will prolong the term of life, because it stays elastic for a longer time. Sofas are also filled with more expensive and elastic stuff - latex.

The best choice will be the sofa with several stuff layers. Lower layer is made of firm polyurethane, to make the sofa elastic; and the upper layer is made of softer and thinner polyurethane. Such combination creates an additional feeling of comfort. All this is covered with synthetic fiber. It is not typical for cheap models. The most popular fiber is synthipon, but the best one is considered to be hollofiber – it perfectly reestablishes its primary form after deformation and is durable. You should know, that the sofa price increases with the use of synthetic fibers.

Spring cartridges are used for orthopedic reasons (the spine burden is minimal). The quantity of spring cartridges on one square meter can considerably differ. It will affect not only the level of comfort, but the total cost. The quality of springs is also very important. It will be difficult to change them in case of the breakage. So sometimes it is better to buy a sofa only with qualitative polyurethane or latex filling stuff without springs.

It is recommended to buy a sofa with an upholstery zipper. This trifle allows not only to see the inside stuff, but also to change the old upholstery.

Sofa upholstery
Leather sofa is very practical in useWhile choosing the upholstery, pay attention to the upholstery material. The sofa comfort and term of life will depend on the quality of upholstery. The most expensive and elite was always considered to be leather furniture. But nowadays there are hi-tech fabrics that are of the same quality and price.

The presence of teflon impregnation is recommended for fabric upholstery. It protects upholstery from moisture, which trickles down from the sofa, without getting inside. Naturally, such impregnation creates a special protection from dust and mud. The cost of fabrics with Teflon impregnation is much higher. So you are to make a choice – low price or high practicality. Teflon can be also used as a sputtering on the fabric. It will cost less and won’t be much worse by the protective characteristics. Unfortunately, it is impossible to notice a visual difference of Teflon fabric, so you’ll have to trust the seller.

The most expensive fabric is shenille. It is very soft and practical in use, it is considered to be as elite as leather, besides it is warn and nice to touch.

Gobelin isn’t so elegant, but it looks quite beautiful. It consists mainly from the synthetic fiber polyester. It is practical and wearproof. This fabric has a large variety of colors and patterns. That’s why it will be easy to choose one, that will suit your interior.

Flock consists the same fibers as gobelin. The only difference is in the soft covering, which needs careful maintenance. If you clean the flock upholster carefully, it will serve you for many years. But sometimes abrasion is inevitable.

If you want to choose an elegant sofa, then jacquard will perfectly suit for upholster. This fabric is also expensive, but the pattern complexity will make your interior stylish. But notice, that only dry clean can be used.

Not long ago a new fabric has appeared – microfiber. Microfiber upholster is qualitative and practical. Teflon covering is characteristic for microfiber. Along with water and dust resistance, this fabric has a good durability. Sofa with such upholster won’t fade.

Before choosing a specific sofa, ask, if there is an upholster passport. Only qualitative furniture has such passport. In the passport there will be all useful fabric characteristics and advice about taking care.

You should select the leather sofa with full responsibility either. First, the leather itself should be of high quality or it can become used off quickly. Second, the paint should be of high quality or your sofa will have rubbed spots soon. There are models with replaceable cushions. These models will cost you more because of the greater leather outlay but they are also more practical because these cushions could be replaced if necessary.

Leather sofas are not the cheap ones that is why the developers do not economize the materials but the give you the highest quality. For example, even the back sides of sofas are covered with the material of the same quality as of the front ones. Air permeability is a very useful quality of the sofa it will let your body “breath” when it touches the covering. All this information is specified in the passport so you can select a truly high quality sofa.

Mechanisms of sofas’ transformation
Before purchasing make sure the sofa’s transformation mechanisms work.If you want a sofa to use it as a bed then you will surely need a transforming one. The quantity of different options is huge but we’ll describe the basics. The simplest mechanism is book-sofa.

In such sofas the seat is rolled forward and the back takes its place. Under the seat is usually a place for storing pillows, blankets and other stuff. But this way of transformation requires a specific room between the sofa and the wall or you will have to move it permanently.

It can be very uncomfortable if the back of the sofa is quite high and if you have to move the sofa on the parquet. That’s why this mechanism is slowly replaced by the others. As a sort of this mechanism there is a one called “eurobook” or “click-clack”. This mechanism is convenient because it has several positions for the back. It is useful if you want to half lay or half sit on your sofa.
«Roll out» mechanism is the most reliable one. The construction is made of three parts.

The sofa is transformed by rolling out as it is specified by the name of the mechanism. When you pull the front side forward it rolls out and drags two other parts of the construction behind. Though the mechanism uses rollers the soft floor still can be damaged. So the rubberized rollers are recommended. The case for pillows in such models is in the front side. Important note: these models are suitable only for quite large rooms, because in the transformed state the length of such sofa can reach two and a half meters. But the place for sleeping is large and comfortable.

Selecting a sofa with ”French transformation” mechanism is better if you don’t intend to transform it very often. To do it you will have to remove all the cushions and elbow-rests then pull forward the seat consisting of two parts with stems. This variant is not suitable for everyday use and is better for accepting guests. More reliable mechanism is called “Sedaflex”.

The sofa with the “accordion” mechanism is very simple to use. The transformed sofa looks much like a sofa with “roll out” mechanism. The difference is that in the “accordion” mechanism the back is laid upside-down. To transform the sofa you should pull up the seat a little before it clicks then pull it forward manually. The mechanism is reliable and even children can use it but it requires a lot of space for transformation. And the case for pillows is not always large enough.

Information about different materials will help you in selecting a sofa with acceptable combination of price and quality. But the feeling of comfort is individual so don’t be shy and try to explore your future sofa right in the store. Imagine that your are using the sofa at home and only then you will be able to tell whether you feel comfortable on it or not. Then you will have the precious pleasure while watching TV or reading a book on your sofa.

The choice is yours and we wish you a good purchase and good times on your sofa!

Home Improvement: Home Office Tips

With all of those files, papers, and general cutter, it’s hard to keep your home office organized. But we have some helpful ideas and tricks to make it a little easier.

Office Space

Where you set up your home office is crucial in determining how functional and comfortable it will be. Its location will also affect other areas in the home, as well as determine how simple it will be for you to contain workspace disarray. The choice of location will be guided by the amount of space you need, which depends on three key factors: whether the office is a full or part-time workspace, the type of work you’ll be doing in the office, and the space you have available.

For instance, a busy home-based marketing consultant may require a set of bulky filing cabinets, a variety of computer equipment, and a place to hold meetings. All of which call for an entire room. On the other hand, a simple setup to pay bills and surf the net can require little more than a converted closet or a corner of a large living room.

Start by assessing how much space you need. Consider the number of books and reference materials you’ll use regularly and honestly judge the amount of paper you’ll be dealing with. This will help you decide how large your file cabinet will have to be, how much shelf storage you’ll need, and whether you’ll require extra furniture for equipment. Add to this a desk and chair and you’ll come away with a good idea of how much square footage your office space will require.

Next look at available areas in the house. The decision of where to put the office involves balancing the requirements of your home design against your work needs, your family’s needs, and the space available. A wide-open living room may feature a small corner or alcove that could be a natural workspace out of the flow of traffic. This could be a great location for a small set up for paying bills, etc. A guest bedroom would be more convenient and appropriate for a complete telecommuting office which is fully equipped.

Furnishing for Productivity

Once you’re settled on a location for the home office, you need to think about your work windows, doors and furniture. The right environmentally  friendly furniture makes your office setup more efficient, which in turn helps you stay organized. Choose a desk that suits the space and the way you work, storage that provides ample room for work-related materials, and a file cabinet that will accommodate all your files — now and in the future.

Home Improvement Tips: Usability & Classification of Bathroom Mirrors

Bathroom mirrors are one of the most useful fixtures we use everyday. From the moment we wake up until the wee hours of the morning, these mirrors are found very useful. Although mainly utilized for vanity purposes, there is no denying that these mirrors serve an important purpose in our everyday lives.

Although bathroom mirrors are thought of to be the same, there is actually a big difference when it comes to their types and uses. Let us learn more about the various types of mirrors and their uses by reading the sections found below.

The Function

Bathroom mirrors can be classified as fixed or movable. The fixed type is those which are attached to walls and medicine cabinets. The movable mirrors, on the other hand, are those which can be moved and tilted in every direction you want to. Of course, the movable type of mirror is very convenient since you can move it in any direction. The fixed type is also preferred by a lot of home owners because of its size. You can choose to install both types of mirrors in your bathrooms. Just be sure to have enough space in your comfort rooms to fully utilize these mirrors.

The Shape And Size

Mirrors can also be chosen based on their size and shape. There are irregularly shaped mirrors which are full of art and life. There are also oval mirrors which are traditional and elegant. Circular, rectangular, and square-shaped mirrors are also available. You can use any of these mirrors to improve the look of your bathrooms. You may even order custom-made mirrors so they can suit your taste perfectly.

The Framing

Bathroom mirrors may also be classified based on their type of framing. There are frameless mirrors which are bare but elegant. There are also bathroom mirrors made with different frames. You can choose steel, wood, iron, copper, plastic and many other types of materials for the frames of your bathroom mirrors. Be sure to choose frames wisely so you can use the mirrors for a long time in your homes.

The Designs

Bathroom mirrors can also be ordered with designs. There are etched mirrors which are very popular in homes and establishments today. You can have your favorite characters embedded on these mirrors. You can also use colored designs to accentuate your homes.

Your style and preferences actually influence the type of bathroom mirrors you wish to install in your homes. Be sure to choose the ones which suit your bathrooms best.

Home Improvement Tips: Storage Tips for Kitchen

The kitchen can become a magnet for clutter, and when you’re cooking and entertaining guests, that are the last thing you want! Problem solved, because we’re breaking down all of the kitchen storage solutions here.

Furniture and Flow

Kitchen furnishings play a key role in determining how easy the kitchen is to use and how well organized it will be. Whether you’re starting from scratch with a full renovation or are looking to make modest changes to your existing layout, your furniture choices should be guided by practicality. The right furniture will actually help break the clutter habit, because you’ll have the correct amount of storage space in the right locations for all your equipment, cookware, and dry goods.

Cabinetry

Cabinet space is often the most valuable real estate in the kitchen. Whether you’re putting in new cabinets or working with existing units, try to optimize the space by creating specified storage areas. For instance, decide which cabinet will hold the canned goods, then make sure you have the right cabinet capacity and that the shelves are adjusted properly to allow placement of and access to the canned goods.

Organize your shelves as a shopkeeper would by placing multiples of the same product one behind the other with the labels facing out. If you decide to keep glasses and dishes in a cabinet, allow room around stacks and rows to prevent breakage. When choosing cabinets, opt for adjustable shelves to allow maximum flexibility in what will be stored where.

Shelving

If you prefer, open shelving is a substitute for cabinets. You can change the look of your kitchen and make stored items more accessible by replacing outdated cabinets with sturdy shelves. For a simple, fresh, and inexpensive alteration, take the doors off frameless cabinets and refinish the shells as built-in shelving units.

Shelves can force you to be organized because everything is in plain view. The shelves and how you store your items not only serve an aesthetic purpose, it also lets you see inventory at a glance. Even in a traditional kitchen with standard top-and-bottom cabinetry, shelves provide added storage that can be reconfigured as needed or as the design of the kitchen changes.

Another option is stainless-steel shelving that comes in freestanding units or single shelves. Simple wood shelves can be painted any color to blend right in with walls or to contrast with the wall color and serve as a focal point. Assess your shelving needs based on what you can’t or don’t want to put in available cabinets. Just keep in mind that any items that can be hung shouldn’t sit on a shelf or in a cabinet. And as with cabinets, the best shelves are adjustable.

Home Improvement: Oscars Party Tips

Make your home look its best when you invite the gang over for your annual Oscars bash. Sally Morse, Canada’s director of creative services for Hunter Douglas, the leading manufacturer of custom window fashions, has the following tips for refreshing the rooms you’ll be entertaining in the most.

Living Rooms – Refresh your living room with slipcovers. Morse suggests bringing standard slipcovers to a monogram shop where you can add your initials, a family crest or motto to give them a custom look. Brighten up that dark fireplace with the addition of some pale wood strung with lights and replace pictures with groupings of mirrors to add reflected light to the room.

Living room fashion tip from Sally: Bring the outdoors in with Hunter Douglas Silhouette window shadings. Featuring soft fabric vanes suspended between two sheer facings, this window fashion allows you to have your view and even with the vanes open, filter out up to 88 percent of harmful UV rays. A new Bouclé fabric for this product features an organic-inspired, natural look in the three-inch and a four-inch vane size.

Dining Rooms – To dress up your dining room, get your silver, mercury glass, and china out from the cupboard and put it on display. Add an area rug and change the shades on lamps and ceiling fixtures. Sheer shades will create a soft translucent light.

And here’s a window and doors tip: There is windows and doors are playing major role during improvement, Try a versatile window fashion like Silhouette window shadings, or Luminette Privacy Sheers, a product similar to Silhouette shadings but on the vertical. Put all lighting on dimmers so that you can be the movie director of your meals.

Media Rooms – These are now perhaps the most popular new room in the house, and it will be where you’ll want the gang to ultimately gather to watch The Oscars. To make your room seem like a movie theater, take some tips from Morse and add movie posters (available on the Internet on sites like MoviePosters.com) and a popcorn machine.

And for the windows: Be sure to have opaque window coverings. A good choice is newly updated Somner custom vertical blinds, the most complete collection of vinyl and fabric styles on the market with the rich look of hardwood offered as well. Motorization and specialty track systems make it possible to operate these blinds with a touch of a button for Oscars Showtime.

An excellent choice of window treatment for your media room is Vignette Modern Roman shades, a dramatically improved innovation on the traditional Roman shade available in everything from seersucker to satin weaves, with Power Rise with Platinum Technology for remote control operation at the touch of a button (see the photo at the top of this column for an example of these handsome shades in a media room). Duette Architella honeycomb shades in an opaque fabric with PowerRise with Platinum Technology are another option.

Movie-themed decor is all around the Internet, if you know where to look. I found a Bed Bath & Beyond metal wall sculpture of two movie reels that had me laughing pretty hard. Kitsch, yes, but fun for the wall of your media room, especially on Oscars night!

Kitchens – Don’t be afraid of adding color to your kitchen, Morse advises. She reports that the recent addition of a black glass backsplash to her counters sets off other colours and adds space by creating an optical illusion of infinity. Something as simple as changing your kitchen towels can add colour and "spice" to a kitchen.

With these home improvement tips, the most important rooms in your home will be ready to welcome guests come Oscars night.

I also found some great Oscar party tips on Mahalo.com. Check them out, and have fun viewing the Longest Show on Earth.

One final note: While you may not be nominated this year for an Academy Award, you can still WIN BIG with CasaGuru’s House-full of Prizes Contest. It runs from February 16 to March 30, and there are $23,000 in house prize packages, so hurry up and enter — and check out the great home resources available on the CasaGuru site. I want to thank the CG folks for access to Sally Morse’s great tips in this column, too!

Re-Design Tips for Old Kitchen

The best ideas are timeless, as shown in this kitchen designed in 1960, whose space-saving principles can still be used today.

Although this kitchen’s style may be out of date, its space-saving ideas aren’t. After all, who doesn’t want more space in the kitchen? This article from the House Beautiful archives has some great, modern ideas.

All the equipment for a full-size kitchen was put into a tiny area, yet it was dovetailed so carefully that there’s no closeted-in feeling. And since the owner of this kitchen was a cooking and entertaining guru, it had to provide all of the gourmet amenities.

The refrigerator, range, one-bowl sink, and dishwasher are all standard size, so there is no skimping on food storage, preparation, or cleanup facilities. Extra base-cabinet space was achieved on the inside wall (sketch) by using a shallow 12"-deep cabinet (24" is standard). The counter is more useful because the shelves over it are only 9" deep (wall cabinet depth is usually 13").

These are open shelves, rather than cabinets, so that the eye “reads” through them to the wall, to get a greater sense of depth. (Below eye level, space can be enclosed without confining the line of sight.)

How to accommodate the essential basic equipment in such limited space was the big problem. At one end of the room, a jog was just wide enough to accommodate a 30-inch, four burner gas ranges.

A shelf built above the range, overhanging it at the rear, holds the portable electric rotisserie-oven, which can be moved elsewhere for table broiling or baking or to rotisserie a fowl or roast.

By using a wall-hung refrigerator-freezer, a sizable chunk of floor space was saved that could be utilized for the sink and base cabinets. Immediately below, counter space is convenient for receiving foods as they are removed from the refrigerator.

This arrangement also made it possible to install a dishwasher to the right of the sink and provide some cabinet storage at the left. Below the refrigerator, at the back of the counter, a step shelf holds oil and vinegars and other ingredients used for salads.

This article by Nancy Craig was originally published in the April 1960 issue of House Beautiful.

  • Wear protective clothing, particularly boots.
  • Control fire ants when they appear in areas frequented by people, pets or livestock. Use bait products that the ants carry back to their nests.

Disease-carrying ticks:

  • Early detection. Inspect your body and clothing frequently. Also inspect your children and pets. Wear light-colored garments so you can see any ticks more easily. Tuck pants into socks to prevent ticks from gaining access to your body.
  • Use pesticides and repellants judiciously. Spray them on boots and clothing.
  • Create tick-free zones in areas that you and your family use regularly.
